Tacloban Adapts to Rising Fuel Prices with Community-Centered Solutions
In response to surging global fuel costs, Tacloban City is taking bold steps to protect its residents from economic strain. Mayor Alfred Romualdez has unveiled a set of contingency measures that not only conserve fuel but also encourage community cooperation and sustainable living.
At the heart of the plan is a directive to limit non-essential government travel. City employees are now required to cut back on trips outside Tacloban, ensuring that official vehicles are reserved for critical functions. This move, though seemingly small, is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption across government operations.
But the mayor’s call goes beyond government offices. Romualdez is urging Taclobanons to embrace carpooling and even walking when possible. “Every liter saved is a peso kept in the pockets of our people,” he emphasized, highlighting how collective action can ease the burden of rising costs. For many residents, sharing rides is not only practical but also a way to strengthen community ties.
To further cushion households, Tacloban has introduced a four-day workweek for city employees. Fridays are now designated as work-from-home days, cutting down on commuting expenses while maintaining productivity. For workers, this adjustment means more time at home and less strain on their wallets.
The mayor also underscored the importance of advancing development projects, including the planned transfer of Tacloban’s public market. He warned against fuel hoarding, which could destabilize supply chains and worsen price hikes. By ensuring fair access to resources, the city hopes to keep local markets stable and goods affordable.
These measures were officially announced by Mayor Romualdez and reported by the Philippine Information Agency on March 23, 2026, in an article titled “Tacloban City adopts measures amid soaring fuel prices.” The report confirms the city’s commitment to reducing fuel consumption and protecting consumers from economic impact.
